Intimacy and Relationships with a Stoma

Worries about intimacy are common after stoma surgery — and rarely as difficult in reality as they feel beforehand.

Communication comes first

An understanding partner usually cares far more about you than about a stoma. Talking openly, in your own time, removes much of the anxiety and builds closeness rather than distance.

Practical reassurance

Emptying the pouch beforehand, smaller or specially designed pouches, and supportive clothing can all add confidence. There is no need to rush; comfort and trust matter more than timing.

Help is available

If intimacy remains a worry, a stoma nurse can offer practical, non-judgemental advice. Many people find their relationships are as full and close as they ever were.
