Dignity in His Later Years: Bakri’s Story

At seventy, Bakri valued few things more than his independence. A lifetime of standing on his own feet had taught him to measure his days by what he could still do for himself.

He kept his own routines, came and went as he pleased, and took quiet pride in needing no one’s help. Among neighbours and friends, he was known as a man entirely his own — courteous, capable, content.

A fear of losing it

After surgery left him with a urostomy, he feared he was about to lose the thing he prized most. He worried about managing his own care, about relying on others, about a slow erosion of dignity in his later years. The wartime scarcity of urostomy supplies made those fears feel justified, and — rather than risk it — he began to withdraw from the community life he had always enjoyed.

For a man who had defined himself by his independence, the prospect of being looked after felt less like care and more like a loss he could not quite name aloud.

Dignity, supported

A dependable supply of the products he needed, together with a nurse’s respectful guidance, restored his confidence to manage on his own terms. Reassurance from others living with a urostomy helped him see that his dignity was not lost — only, for a season, in need of a little support.

With the basics secure, the world opened back up to him at exactly the size he was used to: his own, and on his own terms.

His own man, still

Bakri remained the independent man he had always been. His story is a reminder that dignity in old age is something worth protecting — and that sometimes it takes no more than the right supplies, reliably delivered, to do it.

An illustrative story. To protect the privacy and dignity of the people we serve, this account does not portray a real, identifiable individual. It is a fictional story drawn from the real experiences and outcomes of Giving Island’s work, written to convey the human reality behind the supplies we deliver.

Behind every story like this is a simple thing: the right supplies, delivered in time.
