Kamal came close to losing his life. At fifty, a serious infection — peritonitis following surgery — turned an ordinary recovery into a fight to survive.
He had been a healthy, active man, used to providing for his family and planning for the years ahead. Illness on this scale was not something he had ever imagined facing, and it arrived without warning.
Grateful, and daunted
Emergency intervention saved him, and to do so left him with a stoma. He was profoundly grateful to be alive — but recovery was daunting. Weak from the ordeal and facing an unfamiliar daily routine, he found the uncertainty of sourcing supplies during the war added fresh fear to an already fragile time. Survival, it turned out, was only the first hurdle.
It is a strange place to stand: thankful for your life and frightened by it at the same time. Kamal needed more than to be saved. He needed to believe he could live well again.
A stable base
A steady supply of stoma care products gave him a stable base from which to heal. A nurse guided him gently back to managing his own care, and the encouragement of others who had survived similar crises helped him believe in a full recovery rather than a permanent convalescence.
As his strength returned, so did his sense of the future — the ordinary plans he had almost lost the right to make.
