Hana had spent much of her twenties unwell. Years of inflammatory bowel disease meant pain, exhaustion, and a life quietly arranged around symptoms she could never fully predict.
Plans were made tentatively and broken often. She watched friends move through their twenties with an energy she could only remember, and learned to keep her hopes small enough to survive another bad week.
Relief, and a new adjustment
Then surgery and an ileostomy finally offered relief. The irony was not lost on her: the operation that freed her from constant illness brought a new adjustment to manage. At twenty-seven, she wanted to seize the energy she had regained — but worried that a stoma might hold her back, especially when supplies were so hard to come by in wartime. The freedom she had longed for felt suddenly conditional.
