Purpose in the Face of Helplessness

One of the hardest parts of living far from a conflict is the helplessness — the sense that there is nothing you can do for the people you love.

At this gathering on [INSERT: date], around [INSERT: number] volunteers turned that helplessness into action. Every box packed was a direct, concrete contribution to easing suffering back home — and that matters more than words can easily capture.

Doing something that counts

Psychologists have long observed that a sense of agency — the feeling that your actions make a difference — is protective for mental wellbeing under stress. Our volunteers were not thinking in those terms; they simply wanted to help. But the effect was clear: people felt useful, and feeling useful eased the burden they carried.

From worry to action

For many, the packing day became the part of the month where worry was channelled into something good. The supplies reached patients in Sudan; the act of preparing them helped the people of Belfast carry on. [INSERT: an anonymous reflection or photo from this session.]

Every gathering turns donated supplies into lifelines for patients in Sudan — and a source of connection here in Belfast.
