Avoiding Blockages: Diet Tips for Ileostomates

A food blockage can happen when fibrous foods gather at a narrow point in the bowel. With a few simple habits, the risk is low.

Foods to take care with

Stringy or tough foods — such as celery, sweetcorn, mushrooms, nuts, dried fruit and fruit skins — are more likely to cause problems if not chewed well. You do not need to avoid them all; introduce them carefully and in small amounts.

Chew well and stay hydrated

Thorough chewing is your best protection, along with drinking enough fluid. Eating regular, moderate meals rather than large ones also helps.

If a blockage starts

Signs include cramping, swelling around the stoma, and reduced or watery output. Gentle movement, a warm bath and sips of fluid may help in the early stages. If output stops completely, or you have severe pain or vomiting, seek medical help without delay.
