For as long as anyone in her family could remember, Salma’s table was the centre of everything. Meals were planned around it, grandchildren did homework there, and neighbours often dropped in unannounced, knowing they would leave with tea, food, and conversation. At fifty-eight, after surgery for bowel cancer left her with a colostomy, she feared that role had quietly come to an end.
Surviving cancer had already demanded more strength than she thought she had. But the stoma brought a different kind of challenge—less visible, but constantly present. She became anxious about leaks, odour, and the unpredictability of supplies, especially in a place where access to reliable stoma products was inconsistent.
Gradually, she began to step back from the kitchen. At first it was small things—letting others cook, avoiding long meals at the table—but soon she was spending more time alone, convinced she had become a burden rather than the anchor she once was.
