Exercise and Staying Active with a Stoma

Staying active is good for your body and your mood — and a stoma need not stop you.

Start gently after surgery

In the weeks after your operation, begin with gentle walking and build up slowly. Avoid heavy lifting until your surgeon or nurse says it is safe, as your abdomen needs time to heal.

Activities to enjoy

Walking, swimming, cycling and most everyday activities are well suited to life with a stoma. Many people return to sport and active work. Support garments can add comfort and confidence during exercise.

Protect your core

To reduce the risk of a hernia around the stoma, build core strength gradually and avoid straining. If you are unsure about a particular activity, a stoma nurse can guide you.
