Preventing and Managing Stoma Leaks
Leaks are one of the most common worries for people with a stoma — and most are preventable once you understand the causes.
Get the fit right
The most common cause of leaks is a poor fit. The opening of your flange should match the size and shape of your stoma closely. As your stoma settles in the months after surgery, re-measure regularly and adjust.
Prepare the skin well
A seal only holds on clean, dry skin. Avoid moisturising products around the stoma, and make sure the area is fully dry before applying a new pouch.
Use accessories if needed
Barrier rings, seals and pastes can help fill uneven areas and improve adhesion, especially if your stoma is flush with the skin or in a crease. Your stoma nurse can advise which products suit your body.
If leaks keep happening despite a good routine, do not struggle on alone — speak to a stoma care professional, who can help troubleshoot the cause.
