Common Stoma Problems and When to Seek Help
Most stoma issues are minor and easily resolved. Knowing what to watch for helps you act early and stay well.
Everyday problems you can manage
Sore skin, minor leaks and occasional wind are common and usually fixed by adjusting fit, routine or diet, as covered in our other guides. A little troubleshooting goes a long way.
When to seek help promptly
- No output from your stoma for several hours, with pain, bloating or nausea (possible blockage).
- Heavy bleeding from the stoma (a little when cleaning is normal).
- A stoma that turns dark, dusky or pale.
- A bulge appearing behind or around the stoma (possible hernia).
- Skin that stays broken, sore or weeping despite good care.
When in doubt, contact your stoma nurse or doctor. Acting early keeps small problems small.
