Stoma Care in Hot Climates: Advice for Patients in Sudan

Hot climates bring particular challenges for stoma care. A few adjustments make a real difference to comfort and security.

Stay well hydrated

Heat increases fluid loss through sweat, and people with an ileostomy or urostomy are especially prone to dehydration. Drink regularly through the day, and watch for signs such as dark urine, tiredness or dizziness.

Protect your adhesion

Sweat can loosen the pouch seal. Make sure skin is completely dry before applying a pouch, and you may find you need to change a little more often in hot weather. Barrier products can help adhesion hold.

Store supplies carefully

Keep pouches out of direct sun and extreme heat, which can affect the adhesive. Store them somewhere cool and dry, and keep a small kit with you when out in the heat.
