More Than Packing: The Moment We Noticed the Change

By the third gathering, we noticed something we had not gone looking for. People were arriving a little brighter than before, and leaving brighter still.

The community gathered once again to sort and pack supplies. The practical work was the same as before — but the room had changed. Someone who had barely spoken at the first session was, by the end of this one, in the middle of every conversation.

What the table held

Many in the room were living through the distress of watching their home country at war, often with family still there. That kind of worry is usually carried quietly and alone. Around the table, it had somewhere to go — into the work, and into the easy company of people who understood without needing it explained.

Shaping it on purpose

Once we understood what was happening, we stopped leaving it to chance. We began allowing a little more time for tea, for talk, for people to arrive early and stay late. The supplies still had to be packed — that remained the point — but we had learned that the room was doing two jobs at once. [INSERT: an observation or photo from this session.]

Every gathering turns donated supplies into care delivered — and brings a community a little closer together.
